Often we read our bibles and pass the word “my servant”, servant-hood is key for us to obtain and walk in the full provision of God’s blessing in our lives. Sadly our generation doesn’t seem to grasp this Kingdom principle of serving, we want to sidestep every principle that places a demand on our selfish nature.
The word servant basically means “one that serves others”. In the Old Testament we read countless of times when God spoke to His servants, not bishops, elders, deacons [titles] you get what I mean. There is a place for titles but first we are servants of one Master and Maker of the universe our Lord Jesus Christ, lets cement this with two reference scriptures.
In Numbers 12:7, we read
But this is not true of my servant Moses; he is faithful in all my house.
This is God Himself speaking to Aaron and Miriam. Notice how God refereed to Moses my servant and a great servant at that, God called him “faithful” in all my house, can you be called faithful in the house of God.
In 2 Samuel 7:25-26 NIV we read
And now, LORD God, keep forever the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house. Do as you promised, 26 so that your name will be great forever. Then men will say, ‘The LORD Almighty is God over Israel!’ And the house of your servant David will be established before you.
David was a man who considered himself a servant of the Lord. Being a servant leader first starts with the leader having the mindset of serving. This starts with the leader’s thoughts about others and serving. But having the mindset of leadership is hard because it is outward focused and people are naturally inward focused. But serving others can be adapted and learned. This can be done by making a decision to direct your thoughts toward serving others. Directing your thoughts toward serving takes work but it’s worth the effort.
Jesus tells his 12 apostles in Mark that if they want to be first in the kingdom of God they must be the servant of all. Not just servants of those that might get them into higher places, but of everybody they meet. They must be last in order to be first.
God is looking for servants not volunteers, yes you may start as a volunteer but don’t stay there move on to be a servant with the heart of God. Many people in church are volunteers and not servants they are stuck at the cross and never moved on to be seated with Christ in heavenly places. Decide today to move from volunteering to servant-hood, and serve in you local church, at work, at home and everywhere you go and watch the blessing of the Lord come and overtake you.
Heavenly Father, I am your servant, I serve in your kingdom and I surrender my body, soul and spirit to do your will today. Please forgive me and cleanse me from any sin I have committed. I want to be a vessel suitable and honourable for your purposes. Please help me to be ever mindful that I am your servant. Thank you Father!
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
